He emigrated to France before 1858. There he owned a spice shop at 13 Bouret street in 19th district in Paris. He was a member of the Federation of Polish Immigrants founded in 1866 by Jarosław D±browski and Walery Wróblewski. He took an active part in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, serving in the National Guard. The photograph shows him wearing a uniform of the 164th battalion , 5th company, carrying a Chasepot rifle from 1866 with a bayonet. He is also seen carrying a Fouchaux revolver from 1858, something not commonly seen in the army.
